These pictures were made during an airplane flight from Groton, Connecticut, to Martha’s Vineyard in the summer of 1978. The airplane was traveling west to east. I was in the passenger seat to the right of the pilot focusing my camera out the side window, which was facing south in most cases. The flight lasted about an hour.
In 2021, I revisited these images and placed them in chronological order using the 35mm negative strips as my guide. I remember a few of the events and landmarks represented in the photographs. Most, however, had to be identified by matching land features within the pictures to those on a map. Some locations were only approximately identified.
My memory tells me that I timed the last shutter release with the exact moment the wheels touched down on the tarmac. But this could be a fabrication.
